What Can I Do In Evangelism?

The church is a spiritual entity. It is God’s family; it is the body of Christ. Those in it are there because of a new birth, being born of water and the Spirit when their faith and repentance led them to be baptized. They manifest the fruit of the spirit in their lives. They wear the whole armor of God. As members of the church we have an assigned work — assigned by Jesus Himself. That work is to “teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you” (Matt. 28:19-20). But you ask, “What can I, just an ordinary member, do in this work of evangelism? I’m not a preacher. I can’t go to China. So, what is there for me?” I’m glad you asked that question. Do you really want to know what to do? Then read on. If you are not interested in doing anything in helping others be saved, then you might as well stop reading right here. But you are interested, aren’t you?

Every Christian is to be a Soul Winner

Every Christian has the armor of God. Read Eph. 6:10-17. Now one piece of this armor is “the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God” (vs. 17). What do you do with this sword? It is not to spread butter! It is to share God’s message to others. It is to war with the Devil. We do this by invading his kingdom and bringing souls out of it into the kingdom of God’s dear Son. Early Christians realized their opportunity. When a great persecution arose against the church in Jerusalem, the members were scattered throughout all the regions of Judea and Samaria (Acts 8:1). “Therefore, those who had been scattered went about preaching the word” (vs. 4). The result was that thousands were saved by their efforts. You, too, are to be a soul-winner. “Yes, Forrest, but you haven’t told me how.” Well, let’s see if we can find out.

Every Christian is to Pray Evangelistically

Pray for every one who is preaching and teaching the word to others (Eph. 6:18-20; Col. 4:3-4). Pray for more workers (Matt. 9:38). Pray in behalf of those with whom we are trying to convert (Rom. 10:1). This is something you can do. Will you do it?

Every Christian is to Give to Help Support the Preaching of the Word

In 1 Cor. 9:13-14 Paul writes: “Do you not know that those who perform sacred services eat the food of the temple, and those who attend regularly to the altar have their share with the altar? So also the Lord directed those who proclaim the gospel to get their living from the gospel.” He also wrote, “For the Scripture says, ‘You shall not muzzle the ox while he is threshing,’ and ‘The laborer is worthy of his wages” (1 Tim. 5:18). Are you giving as prospered so that those who preach may be supported?

Every Christian is to Live the Right Kind of Life

“That you may prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world” (Phil. 2:15). By living the right kind of life, doors of opportunity will be opened for us to teach.

Every Christian is to Bring Up His Children in the Way of the Lord

You know what the Lord says about bringing up a child in the way he should go. Your children can be led to accept Christ and His way if you will do all you can to instruct them and show them by example what is right. Too many parents neglect their children. They are guilty of spiritual child-abuse by not guiding them in the Lord’s way.

Every Christian Can Ask Others to Study or Come to Services or Home Classes

If you can say, “Will you come with me?” then you can ask others and thus have a share in evangelism. You don’t have to teach the class; someone else will be happy to do so. You can be like Andrew who brought Peter to the Lord. You can be like Philip who brought Nathaniel to the Lord. Will you be an Andrew? Will you be a Philip?

These are only a few of the ways in which you can bring a soul to the Lord. What is drastically needed is action! Will you act now for the cause of evangelism?
